Sugar’s Second Chance: How a Community Saved a Beloved Senior Pup
Thirteen‑year‑old Sugar has spent her whole life being a loyal companion — gentle, affectionate, and always close to her sibling pup. But earlier this year, her family received heartbreaking news: Sugar had developed a tumor that required immediate surgery. Without it, her life was at risk. Her owners, already facing financial hardship, simply didn’t have the means to cover the cost of the procedure.
That’s where Hand & Paw stepped in.
Through our Nilla’s Grant program — which provides financial assistance for urgent, life‑saving veterinary care — we were able to fund Sugar’s surgery with the help of one of our generous donors. As with all Nilla’s Grant recipients, Sugar’s family provided proof of income so our Board of Directors could make an informed and responsible decision. Funds are never given directly to recipients; instead, payments go straight to the veterinary provider to ensure every dollar is used for care.
Sugar’s surgery was successful, though she faced a few complications during recovery. Her family stayed by her side, and our team continued to support them through the process. Today, we’re thrilled to share that Sugar is healing beautifully, back to enjoying her days with her sibling, and truly living her best life again.
Stories like Sugar’s remind us why Hand & Paw exists. When families face impossible choices, our community makes hope possible. Thank you to every donor, volunteer, and supporter who helps pets like Sugar stay healthy, safe, and at home with the people who love them.
